I have heard before from other europeans that the right and left have completely different meanings in europe. In my humble opinion europe is a shining example of multi culturalism and socialsim. What most US citizens are not aware of (and which is hard to understand if you don't speak foreign languages) is that one word can have very differing significations in different areas, cultures, languages. For most Europeans "social democrats" or "socialists" mean something completely different than for US citizens. For US citizens it is the synonym of "Communism" or the devil. In Western Europe, the social democrats have always defined themselves in opposition to the Communists. For them they were the enemies while the Americans were the allies. Socialist governments have ruled Spain, (Western) Germany, UK, France, Italy and all other European states during the big confrontation of Democracy versus Communism and they always fought for the values of the West together with the US and NATO. This is why it why I have been so angry reading now about "PES activist groups working together" and other weird assumptions in the article which just don't make any sense to any person who has (outsided the US world) some historical and political education.
